Bringing History to Life - Half Day

Come play and get inspired! Create historians in your classes. Use hands-on experiences with primary and secondary sources, artifacts and simulations to train and inspire your students to think historically. Everything from actual artifacts to an Egyptian sarcophagus, creating LockBox experiences (hands-on escape rooms) and Civil War letters or will it be a speech by Winston Churchill? These get students asking meaningful questions, thinking critically, making observations and inferences, and wanting more!

You will have the opportunity to try out several of these simulations yourself, specifically for the World History I and US History classrooms, but these techniques can be adapted for many subjects. Learn how easy--and hard--it can be to create them, but, boy are they worth it! These are experiences your students will never forget. Let's turn those history "haters" into enthusiastic historians!

Elections have consequences. This is especially true in Idaho where we have seen the political landscape change drastically in recent years due to the influx of those moving into the state under the moniker of "political refugee." The anti-public education sentiment, and attacks on educators, have been growing in Idaho and enemies of public education are entering local and state politics at an unprecedented rate.

This year, we have seen bills presented that could have extreme consequences in our classrooms and schools: arming teachers (without extensive training), vouchers (or ESAs, or tax credits, or...A voucher by any other name would smell as stinky.), library bills, facilities funding, union-busting, and more. Our standard of living, health care, personal rights, the free common schools promised to us in the Idaho Constitution and our very freedom is dependent on our action. It is vital to all aspects of public education that educators be involved in politics.

So where do we start?

Digital Portfolios, Evaluations, and Artifacts, Oh My! - Half Day

Some in the legislature are eager to find ways to institute merit pay. One such way was the the Master Educator Premium, which sunsetted in 2020 and was replaced with the Advanced Professional Endorsement. Regardless of the method or title, some in the legislature want to hold us accountable to either justify our low pay or our pay increases. While we know we are amazing teachers, we must convince them.

So how do we do that? Through data and evidence. Our administrators are not always aware of the awesome things we do in our classrooms day-to-day, so we have to keep track of documents, photos, videos, lists, etc. These are then compiled into our professional portfolios to demonstrate the work we're doing.

But what evidence will work? Which domain would an artifact fall under? How can I provide an overwhelming amount of evidence to negotiate a higher rating on my evaluation? Come to this session and find out.

Traveling Trunks and Historical Adventures: Minidoka Incarceration Camp, Old Idaho Penitentiary - Half Day

Are you interested in inquiry-based learning and using historical objects to engage students in the study of history? Are you interested in bringing the Idaho State Historical Museum into your classroom? If so, this adventure is for you! Pack your trunk and get ready to dig into the Idaho State Historical Society's Traveling Trunks.

This session will provide you with an opportunity to explore two "Traveling Trunks" the Idaho State Historical Society has for use by Idaho Teachers. We will explore the Minidoka Incarceration Camp* (3-12 grade focus) and the Old Idaho Penitentiary* (6-12 grade focus) Traveling Trunks.

You will receive an introduction to what the trunks are and how you can access them for use in your
classroom. Participants will play the part of "student" in a lesson plan from one of the trunks and then small groups will explore the trunk offerings and collaborate with other participants to explore the contents of the other trunk.

Participants will leave with an awareness of the power of object-based learning and ideas for utilizing the traveling trunks in their classroom.

Targeted to Grades 3-12 and 6-12.

*Minidoka Incarceration Camp - In this trunk, authentic artifacts and reproductions from the Minidoka Relocation Center are analyzed to better comprehend Japanese American experiences during World War II. The objects include a plank of wood from the post office at Minidoka, a replica of a War Relocation Authority family number tag that was issued to an incarceree; an insignia patch of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team; the Nisei Soldiers of WWII Congressional Gold Medal; a baseball glove similar to gloves used in the 1940s; a carved wooden bird pin; The Minidoka Interlude, a book which offers an insight into camp life; and a swing band CD featuring songs from the WWII era. Artifacts are tangible links to the past; with careful examination they can reveal how people lived.

*Old Idaho Penitentiary - Discover the stories and circumstances behind the major riots and disturbances at the Old Idaho State Penitentiary through artwork, artifacts, stories, and more. Students will be challenged with thought-provoking questions that will ask them to consider how these events shaped the current state of corrections in Idaho.
